I’ve been working on how to share with people what I do and with whom. Going to a networking event where you have to stand up in front of the room is always clarifying, and the other day was no different!
I now totally get why people say focus on the results you offer and pick a specific client to speak to when doing your introductions. Why? Because when you focus on your tools and techniques, or on your title, or your products or programs, you sound like everyone else in your industry and the tendency is to put in a lot of extra words and “justifying” or one-upping energy in your introduction.
You don’t have time for that!
At a recent event, I had forgotten all this. I got caught up in the comparison game watching others introduce themselves who do similar work to myself, and I got off track and totally forgot my introduction!
Here’s what I did in the moment to pull myself together and deliver a strong introduction when I had no idea what I was going to say:
